Yesterday I had a conversation with a longtime EZTrackIt client, and as we were talking about different things, she started throwing out a laundry list of all the functions she wished our system had: “I always wished you could do that…” She must have named nearly fifteen items – all of which, I was pleased to tell her, we have included in our new edition: EZTrackIt Discovery.

There are times in building a business when big data is a must-have. But in that initial stage of finding product market fit, especially for a new edition of a current product, nothing takes the place of simple one-on-one communication. Forget the focus groups and website analytics. Just talk to your customers and listen to them.

This is the time for casual conversations with real people. Over the past few years, I’ve been making mental notes of the questions, requests and feedback that are frequently repeated, and have listened for variations on these themes (since, often, someone will have a different, and very useful perspective). When developing EZTrackIt Discovery, we didn’t come up with new functions out of thin air; we listened to our customers for a long time, saw recurring themes rise to the surface, and addressed them (if they were technologically feasible!).

During the development of EZTrackIt Discovery, meetings with our technology team went like this:

Patrick: “This is what our customers are saying, and this is what we’d like to have happen when you hit this button.”

Tech Team: “If your customers want this to happen, let’s just do it automatically for them. We don’t even need a button!”

I can’t tell you how many times we did NOT need a button.

That’s the beauty of listening, not just to customers, but to everyone. You’ll find ways to do things you never would have thought possible, and the result is a truly seamless product that already has its market ready and waiting.
