This past Saturday was Groundhog Day and thousands were gathered around Punxsutawney Phil’s lair to witness his famed annual prediction. Phil had good news for us this year. When he emerged, he did not see his shadow, indicating that we will enjoy an early spring. Though this is promising for all us who are ready for the sunny days and warm breezes of spring, how accurate a forecast can we expect a groundhog to give? Not very, according to the StormFax Weather Almanac. The publication records show that only 39% of Punxsutawney Phil’s prophecies have been correct. The lesson here: often we focus too much of our energy on omens, superstitions, and traditions rather than finding more precise and proven methods of forecasting.
The same can be said for our mailrooms. We rely on our experiences to aid in our predictions for package arrival and logging times. We keep hand logs because that is the way they are traditionally done. We accept, even celebrate, the status quo because we have settled into the comfort of familiarity. But perpetuating the outdated process of hand logging packages is like valuing Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of early spring while snowed in in our living rooms in May, watching the weather person announce that the Doppler radar shows a projected foot of snow.
Technology can be difficult to adopt. It’s hard to break deeply rooted habits like hand logging packages.
